What types of files can I protect with NeuShield?

What should I avoid protecting?

Let’s start with the negative case. There are two main types of files that it is not recommended to protect:

  1. We don’t recommend protecting data that is continually opened for exclusive access by an application. Examples of this are:
    1. Active database (Oracle, QuickBooks, etc.) data files. The exception is Microsoft SQL that is supported in the Datacenter Edition.
    2. Active VM images (VMware, VirtualBox, Hyper-V, etc.). You can, however, install NeuShield on the guest VM to protect its data.
    3. Other files that act like a database file (such as the Windows user profile .dat file, etc.)
  2. We don’t recommend protecting active application files, such as .exe, .dll, and other application files.

Note: Keep in mind that we also have operating system rollback (with One-Click Restore), so there is usually no need to protect the application files as they will be rolled back with One-Click Restore.

What can I protect?

We recommend protecting:

  1. User data files (flat files or unstructured data): documents, pictures, video files, spreadsheets, audio files, etc.
  2. Backup files. We can protect database backup files, VM images that are not running (i.e., backups), and application files that are not in use (like installer files, etc.).

Note 1: By default, we only support protecting files up to 2 GBs, so if you want to protect files larger than that, you will need to change the settings on the NeuShield Portal.

Note 2: With the Business Edition, we can support file sizes up to 512 GBs, and with the Datacenter Edition, we can support up to 2 TBs. If backup files are larger than that, we can’t support them.

Note 3: We don’t support Data Engrams for any file larger than 1 GB.
