Reasons for low disk space:
The low disk space alert is generated when NeuShield detects that there is less than 6 GBs of disk space free on any drive that has protected files on it. The reasons for this alert is twofold:
- To reduce disruption: If the drive completely runs out of disk space then protected files will no longer be able to be modified on that drive. NeuShield saves the modifications on an overlay and if there is not enough room to save the modifications then the files cannot be modified.
- To reduce disk space usage: When low disk space is reached NeuShield pauses the regular commit cycle to help reduce the disk usage. Once changes are committed to disk than any new change to that file causes additional disk space usage. However, when files are not committed to disk than the changes are accumulated on the overlay and thus take less disk space.
Because of this, it is recommended to have at least 10 GBs of free space available on all of your drives at all times.
What to do about low disk space
Even though NeuShield will enter low disk space mode when a drive has less than 6 GBs, it will not exit low disk space mode until all drives have at least 10 GBs of free disk space. However, freeing up disk space is all that is needed for NeuShield to exit low disk space. Everything will function as normal once there is adequate free disk space.
Note: if you delete NeuShield protected files the space will not be cleared up immediately. NeuShield protects these files from being deleted so while they look deleted we are still protecting them so that you can recover them later, if needed. For protected files you will need to wait until the files are aged out naturally by NeuShield, which can be up to 30 days.
